Description

Tutors from Coventry Music work with young players who join the City Band from about Grade 2 standard.

With a reputation for giving concerts of a high standard, with a wide variety of pieces, the City Band offers players great performance opportunities at venues such as Warwick Arts Centre and the Belgrade Theatre.

From original works to arrangements ranging from classical to pop, this vibrant ensemble is committed to extending the playing experience to an advanced level.

Coventry Jazz Ensemble

Description

Do you love Jazz music?

Swing, blues, rock and pop are all part of the musical fare for the Jazz Orchestra.

In a standard big band line up of trumpets, saxophones and trombones supported with a rhythm section of drums, bass, keyboard and rhythm guitar, the Jazz Orchestra takes players from Grade 4.  

Young players explore the world of improvisation with repertoire from ‘laid back’ ballads to ‘up tempo’ dance numbers.

With performances at Warwick Arts Centre, the Belgrade Theatre, the Godiva Festival and Coventry Motofest, the band is known for being exciting and uplifting.

Regional Youth Orchestra

Regional Youth Orchestra

The music services of Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire are delighted to invite students to take part in a brand new high quality orchestral experience.

The new Regional Orchestra is intended for high quality young musicians up to the age of 19 and we expect that woodwind, brass and percussion players will be of Grade 7 standard or above.

The new Regional Orchestra will meet for three non-residential weekend courses and we are delighted to be working in partnership with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, the Warwick Arts Centre and the Warwick Schools Foundation.

First Regional Orchestra weekend course Directed by Alexander Walker January 4th/5th 2020 University of Warwick Arts Centre with a major concert on Sunday 5th January in the Butterworth Hall.All students will attend a concert by the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain on Saturday 4th January.

Second Regional Orchestra weekend course Directed by Alex Laing February 22nd/23rd 2020 University of Warwick Arts Centre with a major concert on Sunday 23rd February in the Butterworth Hall.

Third Regional Orchestra weekend course Directed by Richard Laing June 27th/28th 2020 Warwick School with a major concert in Warwick Hall on Sunday 28th June.

The weekend course fee is £50, however for any students who are members of any music service ensemble then the course fee is only £25.

Our aim is to give as many students as possible a high-quality orchestral experience. Please feel free to apply for one, two or all three courses. We will get back to you as soon as possible to confirm if you have been successful.

Timetable for the courses will be confirmed on acceptance but will be similar to: 
• 10.00 registration 
• Rehearsals throughout the day with appropriate breaks
• To finish at 5.00pm on the Saturday ( except for January 4th ) 
• Sunday evening performance 6.00 – 8.00pm 
• Students will be supervised at all times by music staff from the three music services of Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire. 
• Students should bring food and drink sufficient for the day to include lunch and tea.

Our Guest Conductors Alexander Walker - January 4th/5th 
2020 Alexander is a regular guest conductor with orchestras throughout the world. In the UK, he has conducted the BBC Philharmonic (broadcasting on BBC Radio 3), City of London Sinfonia, the New Queens Hall Orchestra and recently made his debut with the English Chamber Orchestra at London’s Cadogan Hall. In recent years, he has also been developing a relationship with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Alex Laing - February 22nd/23rd 2020 
Alex is a violinist, conductor, teacher and writer on music. He is Artistic Director (Music) at the King’s High School in Warwick, coaches and conducts for the National Children’s Orchestras of Great Britain and teaches at the Royal College of Music in the Junior Department. He is founder and Artistic Director of the Darwin Ensemble Chamber Orchestra.

Richard Laing – June 27th/28th 2020 
Richard is a conductor, violinist and writer of remarkable versatility. He is sought after as a conductor of opera, ballet and orchestral concerts and is one of the UK’s foremost choral directors. In an age of increasing specialisation, Richard is a true polymath bringing a wide range of knowledge and influences to his music-making.

Soundlab

Description

Coventry's Centre for Creative Music Making

SoundLab is a new Centre for Creative Music Making with our first centre opening in Coventry in partnership with Positive Youth Foundation, Coventry Music and Coventry City Council. The vision is to create a space for young people to be creative in their music making, open to all, seeking diversity in: musical genre; pathway to music; instruments; vocal styles and culture. Removing the barriers to enable all who wish to engage the opportunity to do so.SoundLab-Cov is for 10-16 year olds who have a range of musical interests and styles including spoken word, dance, electronic, jazz, classical, and more.

It is open to young people who play an instrument, create digital beats/music and those who sing, rap or create spoken word.

At SoundLab-Cov you'll work with a team of professional musicians, with guest artists and performance opportunities across the year.
