Musical School of the Month Mar 2018 - Why where they chosen?

Why did we choose our musical school of the month for March? Here are some great reasons

  • St Laurence's is a school where the performing arts have always been loved and under the leadership of our headteacher, Mrs Cuskelly, the children are able to thrive. Mrs Cuskelly joined our school in January 2018 and the school has come alive musically.

  • All children across the school, from Year R to Year 5, learn to play an instrument. In Reception and Year 1 the children are learning how to use a range of percussion instruments with Mrs Long. In Year 2, the children learn to play the recorder with Mrs Ball. Miss Tyler teaches the ukulele to Year 3 and the flute to Year 4 and Mr Plummer teaches the djembe to Year 5.

  • Every week the children take part in these music lessons and we are about to begin our very own Coventry Music club with Miss Tyler after the Easter holidays.

  • Some children in Key Stage 2 also have guitar and violin tuition.

  • I have begun an 'All Stars' group focusing on a singing, dancing and acting and have almost 40 children attending an after school club on a Monday.

  • The school just hosted Mornings of Music for Key Stage 1, and Year 5 visited Frederick Bird for Key Stage 2 Mornings of Music.

  • Every week we have Music Worship, key stage singing in the hall, and recently 60 children in Years 5 and 6 attended the Young Voices concert at the Birmingham Arena, something that this school has never done before.

  • All of this as well as regular assemblies, school production.

Performing Arts is an integral part of the curriculum here at St Laurence's and children have many opportunities to develop their love of performing. Specially designed lessons are weaved within our curriculum topics to ensure that children have chances to develop further, the skills that they have been taught.

We are looking for more schools that are making an outstanding contribution to music education and delivering excellent opportunities for young musicians.
